Why is The Salton Sea Dying
Because the courts have ruled on the changes to allocation of Colorado River water, The Salton Sea will soon dry-up. The biggest transfer of water from farms to city-dwellers will occur next year! There will be insufficient water remaining to replace what is lost each year through evaporation. As more playa is exposed, it will crack open in the blistering heat. It will get caught up in the wind and blow through The Imperial Valley, already the most asthma-prone county in the state. We have to hope that wise ones will prevail and prevent this from happening. We need an accomplished attorney (My choice is the honorable Janet Reno) to go into federal court and seek to contest the perfection of the MWD's lien on The New River. No pioneers nor the 1922 Colorado River Compact ever imagined recycling Mexicali's wastewater. Next time, we'll discuss why the fish 'die off' from time to time.
